Renka Definition
“Renka (連花) In the Sogetsu school, “Renka” refers to a style of Ikebana where multiple artists collaborate to create a series of interconnected arrangements. It’s inspired by Renga, a Japanese form of collaborative poetry where multiple poets link lines in succession. The Renka style emphasizes the unexpected results and expanded expression that arise from the clash or concurrence of individual styles. The Renka style was developed by Hiroshi Teshigahara, the third Iemoto of the Sogetsu school, as a way to encourage group creativity and collaboration. The name “Renka” comes from Renga, a form of Japanese linked-verse poetry where multiple poets add lines to a poem, creating a collective work. Collaborative process a Renka Ikebana workshop, participants might make an initial Ikebana arrangement, then respond to another participant’s arrangement to create a second one, fostering a dynamic and interactive creative process. Emphasis on Unexpected Results: Hiroshi Teshigahara highlighted the “interesting” aspect of Renka, where the “range of expression can be expanded by the clashing or the concurrence of two individual styles”. The unpredictable outcomes of collaborative work are valued.”
